I can't abstractly adjust focus

I can adjust the focus of my eyes. For example, if I have a flower one meter away and a pine tree thirty meters away, both within my field of view, I can focus on either the thirty meters or the one meter distance as I wish. It happens somehow that I can squeeze the lens in my eye appropriately with the muscle, supposedly. But I can't do this when I don't have these objects in front of me. For instance, if I only have a white wall ten meters away and nothing else in front of me, I can't adjust the focus to one meter. Somehow, I can't squeeze with those muscles in the same way then. I wonder if it could be learned.
