limits of compression

Imagine you have an 800x600 pixel canvas, with each pixel being 24 bits. Imagine you randomly draw pixel values. Consider this: what portion of the images generated this way will be sensible pictures - depicting photos, graphics, movie scenes, etc., and what portion will be mere noise and junk? This ratio gives us an idea of what degree of lossless image compression is achievable.
Now consider: for one image, how many images are there that are not pixel-identical to it but which you would confidently call the same photo? This gives us an idea of what degree of lossy compression is achievable.
